In this lesson, 1st-grade students explored the concept of vibrations by creating their own cup microphones. The lesson began with a discussion about how sound travels through vibrations, using examples like musical instruments and everyday sounds. Students then created simple cup microphones using cups and string, observing how vibrations moved through the string to carry sound from one cup to the other. After testing their creations by speaking and listening through the microphones, students reflected on their observations, discussing how the string’s tension and length affected the sound. Finally, they brainstormed real-world uses for their cup microphones, such as long-distance communication or fun activities. This hands-on activity engaged students with science standards (S1P1) by demonstrating how sound travels through materials and encouraged critical thinking through discussion and reflection.
