Rigor & Relevance Sample 1

In this lesson, 1st-grade students brainstormed creative ways to use light and sound to bring awareness to Fairburn Farmers Market Fridays. The lesson began with a discussion about the market's goal to attract more visitors and examples of how light (e.g., neon signs, flashing patterns) and sound (e.g., jingles, announcements) are used in real-world advertising. Students explored ideas by considering questions such as what colors or patterns of light would catch their attention and what types of sounds or messages would make them want to visit the market. They shared their ideas as a class, building on one another’s suggestions to promote creativity and collaboration. Finally, students sketched their designs for signs or devices, labeling how light and sound would work together to grab attention. This activity integrated science standards (S1P1) by exploring the properties of light and sound and math standards (MGSE1.MD.2) through counting and simple measurements, fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and real-world application of their learning.
