Lesson Summary:In this lesson, students developed a deeper understanding of force and motion by reading a passage, identifying key ideas, and applying their knowledge to share a fact. The lesson began with a class discussion to activate prior knowledge about force and motion, setting the stage for active reading. Students then read a grade-level passage that explained concepts such as push, pull, and the effects of force on an object’s motion. Using highlighters, they identified the main idea and supporting details, focusing on the most important information. Afterward, students synthesized their understanding by writing one fact about force or motion in their STEM journals, connecting it to real-world examples, such as how pushing a swing makes it move or how pulling a wagon changes its direction. By combining reading comprehension with writing and application, this activity encouraged critical thinking and helped students make meaningful connections between scientific concepts and everyday experiences.
