Community Impact

This 1st Grade STEM PBL combined creativity, academic learning, and community service to make a meaningful impact. Students explored the essential question, "What product can we construct using light and sound that will support our school and the Fairburn Farmers Market Fridays?" while engaging in interdisciplinary learning that integrated math, science, and communication skills.

Project Highlights

Collaborative Partnerships:

  • South Fulton Fire Department: Students learned how emergency vehicles use lights and sounds to alert and communicate in the community, inspiring their designs.

  • Teaching Museum South: Students participated in interactive sessions on sound, exploring vibrations, pitch, and volume to deepen their understanding of how sound can grab attention.

  • City of Fairburn: Students created mock sign commercials, presenting their ideas to city officials for potential use at the Fairburn Farmers Market Fridays.

Sign Creation and Learning Integration:
Students designed and built signs incorporating light (e.g., flashing patterns) and sound (e.g., jingles or voice recordings) to attract more visitors to the farmers market. They applied:

  • Math Skills: Counting light flashes, solving word problems, and measuring components.

  • Science Principles: Understanding how light reflects, sound travels, and vibrations create noise.

Community Presentation:
Students shared their signs with the City of Fairburn and received feedback to improve their designs, fostering a sense of civic pride and engagement.

Impact on Learning and Community

Academic Growth: Students’ understanding of light and sound increased from 24% pre-project to 70% post-project, demonstrating significant improvement in science concepts.

Community Contribution: By designing eye-catching signs, students contributed to increasing awareness of the Fairburn Farmers Market Fridays, promoting local businesses and healthy eating.

Engaged Families: Parents and community members supported the project by encouraging attendance at the market and participating in the sign presentations.

This project showcased the power of partnerships, creativity, and integrated learning to inspire young students while making a positive impact on the community.
